For a 1992 to 2000 Civic (EG and EK chassis) the B16, B18, and B20 engines bolt in using factory style mounts. For a K series swap into the same chassis I need aftermarket Hasport mounts and a conversion harness. For a 2001 to 2005 Civic (EM2) the K20 or K24 is the natural answer because the chassis already has K series mounting bosses.

Why the EG and EK are still the favorites
Both chassis were engineered around B series mounting points. Honda used the same subframe geometry across the Civic Si, Integra, and CRX, so a B18 from a wrecked Integra GSR drops in with nothing more than the donor mounts. That is why a clean EG hatch is the platform of choice for a first time Honda swap.
K swap reality check
K series swaps make great power, but they are not weekend projects. I am buying:
- A complete K20 or K24 longblock with intake manifold ($1,500 to $3,500).
- A K series transmission, ideally RSX Type-S six speed ($600 to $1,200).
- Hasport mount kit ($550 to $750).
- Conversion harness, often K-Tuned or Rywire ($350 to $700).
- Hondata K-Pro ECU or FlashPro ($800 to $1,200).
- Stronger axles (DA Integra rear or Insane Shafts) and a shifter cable bracket.
A complete K swap, parts only, lands around $5,500 to $8,500. Add another $2,000 to $4,000 if a shop does the install.
The D to B upgrade path
Many Civics shipped with a D15 or D16 SOHC engine. Moving to a B series is the single biggest power per dollar upgrade in the Honda world. The transmission case bolt pattern is shared, so the existing axles and shift linkage carry over with minor tweaks. The biggest job is the engine mount kit and the ECU change.
H22A swaps in an EG or EK
The H22A is taller and heavier than a B series, which changes the weight balance over the front wheels. The Hasport EGH22 or EKH22 kit handles the mounting. I also need a Prelude transmission, custom axles, and a longer shift linkage. The reward is roughly 200 to 220 factory horsepower with a flat torque curve that a B series cannot match.
The wiring problem nobody warns about
Honda used three OBD generations across the chassis I am swapping into. Mixing an OBD2 engine into an OBD1 chassis (or vice versa) requires a jumper harness or a complete ECU pinout conversion. I always confirm the OBD generation of both donor and chassis before buying anything.
Pro tips
- Source the engine, transmission, and ECU from the same donor car if possible. Mixed parts cause headaches.
- Stronger axles are not optional on a K swap. Stock EG or EK axles snap under K series torque.
- Get the car aligned after the swap. New engine weight changes the camber and toe noticeably.
- If the car will see street use, keep emissions legality in mind. Some states (California, Colorado, New York) enforce strict swap rules.
