There is no new physical brake, just clever use of the ones I already have.

When I switch it on, the wheel-speed sensors monitor each corner dozens of times per second. If a tire starts to slide or accelerate past the target speed, the HDC computer pulses the hydraulic brake at that specific wheel to bring it back in line. It is faster than any human at pumping individual brakes.

Step-by-step activation

Step 1: meet the pre-requisites

HDC will not engage above roughly 20 mph. I bring the vehicle to a complete stop on the flat shelf before the hill. I engage 4-High or 4-Low per my owner's manual. On most Jeeps and Land Rovers, the lowest crawl speeds require 4-Low. I also make sure the steering wheel is centered.

Step 2: engage the system

I find the HDC button on the dash or center console. The icon usually shows a car angled down a slope with a speedometer next to it. I press once and confirm a green indicator on the instrument cluster.

Step 3: set target speed and release the pedals

Can HDC replace real 4-Low technique?

No. HDC is a driver assist, not a substitute for understanding your drivetrain. On long, consistent descents, mechanical engine braking in 4-Low first gear is smoother, cooler, and easier on the vehicle. I use HDC where surfaces are unpredictable and I want the ABS to react faster than I can.
