Can I Test My Singing Voice Online? A Free In-Browser Vocal LabSave

    Quick Answer

Yes. The Vocal Lab below uses your microphone and a pitch detection algorithm (autocorrelation) to analyse your singing in real time, all inside the browser. No audio is ever uploaded.

It bundles three tools in one: a Pitch Tuner that captures a 3 second note and shows the exact pitch, frequency and cents deviation; a Voice Range test that classifies you as Bass, Baritone, Tenor, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto or Soprano; and a 10 second Pitch Stability Analyzer that scores your vocal steadiness out of 100.

You also get an always-on live oscilloscope and volume meter so you can see your voice as you sing. Allow microphone access once and everything runs locally on your device.

    What is the Vocal Lab?

I built the Vocal Lab as a single-page voice analysis suite for anyone curious about their singing voice. It does not replace a vocal coach, but it gives you objective numbers (frequency in Hz, MIDI number, cents deviation, octave, vocal span) that are normally locked inside studio software.

The whole tool runs in your browser using the Web Audio API. There is no sign-up, no cloud upload and no data retention. Close the tab and the recording is gone.

    Tool 1: Pitch Tuner

Tap the orb, sing or hum a note clearly for 3 seconds, and the tuner samples your pitch hundreds of times. It then displays the median frequency to filter out wobble.

    • Detected note with octave (for example G4) and the solfege equivalent (Sol).
    • Frequency in Hz, colour coded green when in tune, amber when sharp, red when flat.
    • Intonation gauge with a needle showing how many cents above or below perfect pitch you are. Within 10 cents is considered "in tune" by most studios.
    • MIDI number, cents, octave and clarity % in a compact details strip.
    • Capture history stores your last 8 captures so you can compare attempts.

    Tool 2: Voice Range Classifier

This is a hold-to-capture test. Press and hold the button while singing your lowest comfortable note, release, then repeat for your highest comfortable note. The Lab then classifies you across the six standard voice types.

    Voice typeTypical rangeFamous singers
    BassE2 to D4 (82 to 294 Hz)Barry White, Johnny Cash, Tim Storms
    BaritoneG2 to G4 (98 to 392 Hz)Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, David Bowie
    TenorC3 to C5 (131 to 523 Hz)Freddie Mercury, Bruno Mars, Pavarotti
    Mezzo-SopranoD3 to F5 (147 to 698 Hz)Adele, Amy Winehouse, Lana Del Rey
    AltoF3 to F5 (174 to 698 Hz)Cher, Tracy Chapman, Toni Braxton
    SopranoG3 to C6 (196 to 1047 Hz)Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion

You also get your vocal span in octaves and a piano keyboard visualisation showing exactly which keys your range covers. The Save Result button downloads a shareable PNG card.

    Tool 3: Pitch Stability Analyzer

Sing or sustain a single vowel for 10 seconds. The Analyzer measures pitch jitter (the average frame-to-frame frequency change) and converts it into a Vocal Steadiness Score from 0 to 100.

    • 85 to 100 - Professional level steadiness. Excellent for recording.
    • 65 to 84 - Good stability with normal natural variation.
    • 40 to 64 - Moderate variation. Improves quickly with warm-ups.
    • Under 40 - High variation. Try hydrating and humming gently before retrying.

You also get average pitch in Hz, total pitch range and the average note. The Download Report button saves your score as a PNG.

    Always-on live strip

Across all three tools, the top of the panel shows a live oscilloscope of your voice waveform plus a volume bar in decibels. This is useful for checking your mic position and gain before you commit to a capture.

How accurate is in-browser pitch detection?

The Lab uses an autocorrelation algorithm at 2048 sample window size, which is the same family of method used by professional tuners like AutoTune and Melodyne for monophonic sources. In a quiet room with a decent built-in laptop or phone microphone, expect accuracy within roughly 2 to 5 cents on sustained notes, which is well within the threshold the human ear can perceive (about 5 to 10 cents for trained listeners).

Background noise, multiple voices, instruments playing in the room or whispering will all reduce accuracy. The clarity % shown in the Tuner result tells you how confident the algorithm was.

Tips for the most accurate result

    • Use a quiet room. Even a fan or fridge hum can drag your detected pitch a few cents.
    • Position the mic 15 to 20 cm from your mouth. Too close adds bass distortion, too far loses signal.
    • Warm up first. Hum gently up and down a comfortable scale for 60 seconds before the Range test.
    • Sing a single open vowel (Ah or Oh) for the Stability test, not words. Consonants disrupt pitch tracking.
    • Hydrate. Even mild dryness adds jitter.
    • Run the Range test on a fresh voice. Tired voices cannot reach their true high notes.

    Privacy

The Lab requests microphone permission once. The audio stream is processed only by the Web Audio API inside your browser tab. Nothing is recorded to disk, nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored after you close the tab. The Save Result and Download Report buttons generate the PNG locally using your own canvas.

    Important note

The Vocal Lab is for fun, learning and self exploration. It is not a clinical diagnostic tool, a speech pathology assessment or a substitute for in-person coaching. If you have persistent vocal pain, hoarseness for more than two weeks, or breathing difficulty, see an ENT or speech language pathologist.
