Upload speed is the number nobody advertises
Advertised speeds almost always describe download only. Cable connections are asymmetric, so a 500 Mbps plan might carry just 20 Mbps of upload. That is fine for streaming Netflix and poor for a household where two people run video calls while a camera uploads footage and a laptop backs up to the cloud.
Fibre connections are usually symmetric, meaning a 300 Mbps fibre plan gives you 300 Mbps in both directions. Why your fast plan still feels slow
When people complain about their internet, the plan is rarely the problem. Three things usually are.
1. Wi-Fi coverage
The 5GHz and 6GHz bands carry more data but pass through walls poorly. A single router in a hallway cupboard can deliver 500 Mbps in the living room and 20 Mbps in the far bedroom. A mesh system with two or three nodes fixes this permanently, and it is cheaper than a year of plan upgrades.
2. Old or overloaded router hardware

- Run a speed test next to the router, then in the problem room. A big gap means a coverage problem, not a plan problem.
- Reboot the router properly and check whether its firmware is current.
- Move the router out of the cupboard. Central, elevated and in the open beats hidden every time.
- Split or prioritise bands. Put smart home devices on 2.4GHz and phones and laptops on 5GHz or 6GHz.
- Wire what you can. Televisions, consoles and desktop machines rarely need to be wireless.
