Quick Answer
An Original Recipe chicken breast is 390 calories. Add a biscuit (180), mashed potatoes with gravy (130) and a 16 oz Pepsi (190) and you are at 890 calories, 1,920 mg sodium and 47 g protein for a single combo.
Switch the breast to a Kentucky Grilled breast (210 kcal) and the soda to unsweetened iced tea (0 kcal) and the same plate falls to 520 kcal, 1,485 mg sodium and 49 g protein. Same protein, almost half the calories.

Why I built a KFC calorie calculator
KFC's official nutrition guide is accurate but not very fast to use. You click into one item, see one number, and have to add the next item in your head. The moment you order a 3-piece bucket plus two sides plus a drink plus a sauce, the math gets messy.
I built this KFC nutrition calculator so you can stack items the way you actually order: a bucket of mixed pieces, a sandwich on the side, a couple of dipping sauces, fries, a soda. The basket on the right shows your total calories, the macro breakdown, and how each macro stacks against a 2,000 kcal reference day.
Where KFC fits in your daily calories
Before stressing about a 590 kcal Famous Bowl, it helps to know your full daily target. I use a TDEE calculator to estimate maintenance calories, then a calorie calculator to set a sensible deficit or surplus. A macro split calculator tells you how those calories should split between protein, carbs and fat, and a protein calculator sets your daily floor.
Once you have those numbers, fitting a 500 kcal KFC plate into a 2,200 kcal day is straightforward.
The four KFC chicken styles, ranked by calories
Every bone-in piece you order falls into one of four cooking styles. Picking the right style is the single biggest calorie lever on the entire menu.
- Kentucky Grilled Chicken. The lightest option by a mile. A grilled breast is just 210 kcal with 38 g of protein and zero carbs. A grilled drumstick is 80 kcal.
- Spicy Crispy. Surprisingly lean for a fried option. A spicy crispy breast is 350 kcal with 36 g of protein.
- Original Recipe. The classic, breaded in 11 herbs and spices and pressure fried. Breast: 390 kcal, thigh: 280 kcal.
- Extra Crispy. The heaviest. The extra dredge of double-breading pushes a breast to 530 kcal and 35 g of fat.
Breast vs thigh vs drumstick vs wing
Within any cooking style, the order from highest to lowest calories is always the same: breast, thigh, drumstick, wing. The breast is the largest piece and carries the most protein, but it also carries the most breading. The wing is the smallest piece and the easiest "cheap" calorie to slot into a bucket order.
For a quick reference, here are the Original Recipe pieces side by side: breast 390 kcal (39 g protein), thigh 280 kcal (19 g), drumstick 130 kcal (12 g), whole wing 130 kcal (10 g). Calories per gram of protein, the breast and the drumstick are the best deal on the bucket.
KFC sandwiches and wraps
The fried-chicken sandwich war hit KFC in 2021 and the menu has not been the same since. The numbers below are for the standard build with sauce and pickles.
- Classic Chicken Sandwich: 650 kcal, 33 g protein, 1,500 mg sodium.
- Spicy Chicken Sandwich: 620 kcal, 33 g protein, 1,500 mg sodium.
- KFC Snacker: 350 kcal, 14 g protein, 690 mg sodium.
- Twister: 680 kcal, 30 g protein, 1,480 mg sodium.
The Snacker is the only sub-400-kcal handheld and a solid pick if you want a side of mac without blowing your day. The Classic and Spicy sandwiches are calorie equivalents, the spicy variant is not the lighter choice people assume.
KFC sides, ranked from lightest to heaviest (individual)
- Green Beans, 25 kcal.
- Corn on the Cob (3 in.), 70 kcal.
- Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, 130 kcal.
- Mac & Cheese, 150 kcal.
- Coleslaw, 170 kcal.
- Biscuit, 180 kcal.
- BBQ Baked Beans, 190 kcal.
- Cheese Curds, 350 kcal (this one bites).
- Secret Recipe Fries (individual), 320 kcal.
If you only remember one swap, swap fries for green beans or corn on the cob. You drop nearly 300 calories without giving up the side slot on your tray. Coleslaw is the sneaky calorie trap because it is a "vegetable", but a single individual cup is 170 kcal and 14 g of sugar.
The KFC bowls and the sodium ceiling
The Famous Bowl is one of KFC's most ordered items and it is also the single highest-sodium item on the menu, at 2,080 mg in one bowl. That is 90% of the recommended daily sodium ceiling for an adult, before you have eaten anything else. The Chicken Pot Pie is heavier in calories and saturated fat (720 kcal, 16 g sat fat) but slightly lower in sodium.
Both are filling and reasonable as a once-in-a-while order, but if you are watching sodium, the bowl is the item to reconsider rather than the chicken itself.
KFC sauces, the silent calorie tax
A small sauce cup looks innocent and most of them are not. Buffalo Ranch and Comeback are 120 kcal each and the size of a thimble. BBQ is the cheapest at 45 kcal. Honey packets are 30 kcal. If you are dipping every piece in two cups of ranch, you can quietly add 240 kcal to a bucket without registering it.
Drinks: the easiest place to save calories
A 16 oz Pepsi is 190 kcal. A 30 oz size is 350 kcal. Mountain Dew at the same sizes is 220 and 410. A medium Classic Lemonade is 130 kcal, sweet tea is 140 kcal.
The free wins: Diet Pepsi (0 kcal), Unsweetened Iced Tea (0 kcal) and Bottled Water (0 kcal). Switching from a 30 oz Mountain Dew to unsweet tea on a single combo saves more calories than switching the chicken style.
How to order a lower-calorie KFC meal (without a sad tray)
- Default to Kentucky Grilled. A grilled breast is 180 kcal less than an Original Recipe breast and 320 kcal less than Extra Crispy, with the same protein.
- Pick one heavy side, not two. Mac and a biscuit and fries adds 650 calories before you touch the chicken. Pair one of those with green beans or corn.
- Replace the soda. Unsweet tea, Diet Pepsi or water saves 130 to 410 kcal depending on size.
- Skip or split the sauces. One BBQ cup (45 kcal) instead of two ranch cups (240 kcal).
- Treat tenders like a portion-control hack. One tender is 170 kcal. Two tenders + a side salad + light Italian dressing is roughly 360 kcal and 31 g of protein.
- If you want fried, pick drumsticks and wings. An Original Recipe drumstick + wing is 260 kcal combined, less than a single breast, with 22 g of protein.

What the data actually comes from
Every calorie and macro value in this KFC calorie calculator was extracted from KFC's own US nutrition guide, which is powered by Nutritionix and updated regularly. I crawled the official ingredient pages on May 15, 2026 to pull serving size in grams, calories, total fat, saturated fat, sodium, total carbohydrate, sugars and protein. Items marked "approximate" in the calculator are limited-time-offer wings whose detail pages currently return zeros on the upstream source; the values shown are the nearest published reference from KFC's own menu summary. Nutrition data may change when KFC updates a recipe.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which KFC meal has the most protein per calorie?
The Kentucky Grilled Chicken Breast at 210 kcal for 38 g of protein, roughly 5.5 kcal per gram of protein. That is leaner than most chicken-breast recipes you would cook at home.
Which KFC item is the highest in calories?
The Chicken Pot Pie at 720 kcal in a single serve, followed by the Twister wrap at 680 kcal and the Classic Chicken Sandwich at 650 kcal.
Which KFC item is the highest in sodium?
The Famous Bowl at 2,080 mg sodium per serving, the Chicken Pot Pie at 1,690 mg, and the Classic and Spicy Sandwiches at 1,500 mg each. Most main items at KFC carry meaningful sodium because the chicken is brined.
Is Extra Crispy really that much heavier than Original Recipe?
Yes. An Extra Crispy breast is 530 kcal versus 390 kcal for Original Recipe. The extra calories come from the second dredge of double-breading, not the chicken itself. Same protein, more carbs and fat.
How many calories are in a 3-piece KFC bucket?
It depends on the pieces. Three Original Recipe drumsticks: 390 kcal. One breast + one thigh + one drumstick: 800 kcal. Three Extra Crispy thighs: 990 kcal. The calculator above lets you build the exact mix.
What is the lowest-calorie KFC meal I can order?
A Kentucky Grilled drumstick (80 kcal) plus a House Side Salad with Marzetti Light Italian dressing (30 kcal) plus unsweetened iced tea (0 kcal) is around 110 kcal with 12 g of protein. Add one more grilled drumstick or a grilled breast to make it filling.
Are the calorie counts the same outside the US?
No. KFC's recipes, oils, portion sizes and side menus differ by country. This calculator covers the US menu only. For other regions, check KFC's local nutrition guide.

The bottom line
KFC is not a single calorie number. The same trip can land anywhere from 350 calories (a Snacker and a salad) to 1,800 calories (a fried bucket plate plus dessert and a large soda), depending entirely on chicken style, sides and drink. The calculator above lets you preview the trip before you make it, which is the only honest way to fit fast food into a calorie target.
