How Do You Cancel LA Fitness Membership?

To cancel LA Fitness membership you have to submit a cancellation form in person at your home club, mail a certified letter, or use the online form where...

Quick Answer

To cancel LA Fitness membership you must submit a written cancellation request. The three accepted methods are: in person at your home club, a certified letter to Fitness International LLC, or the online cancellation form (available only to members in certain states).

Give 30 days notice, keep a stamped receipt, and expect one more monthly charge to hit your card.

The Three Legal Methods

Method 1: Visit your home club, ask for the Operations Manager, fill out a cancellation form and get a stamped copy. This is the fastest option and takes about 15 minutes on a weekday afternoon.

Method 2: Send a signed cancellation letter by certified mail (with return receipt) to Fitness International LLC, P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619-4170. Include your name, account number, home club and cancellation date.

Method 3: In California, New York, Illinois and a handful of other states with online-cancellation laws, use the form at lafitness.com/cancel.

What You Cannot Do

The 30-Day Notice Rule

LA Fitness requires 30 days notice before cancellation takes effect. If you cancel on the 5th of the month, you are still on the hook for the entire following billing cycle.

The workaround is to time your cancellation right after your billing date. Cancel the day after your card is charged and you get almost a full free month of access on the way out.

What Happens if the Annual Fee Is Coming Up

The $59 annual fee bills on the same date every year. If you cancel less than 30 days before that date, you still pay it. Plan cancellation for at least 45 days before the annual fee date to be safe.

If you get charged an annual fee after you have submitted cancellation, save your stamped receipt and dispute the charge with your bank. LA Fitness will not refund without proof of prior cancellation.

Cancelling a Personal Training Package

PT packages are separate contracts. Cancelling your membership does not cancel your PT. You have to cancel the PT package in writing 15 days before its renewal date, using the same in-person or certified-mail process.

Unused PT sessions expire when the package auto-renews. If you paid for 24 sessions and used 20, the four unused sessions vanish on renewal day.

What to Say if They Push Back

Sales counselors are trained to run a retention script. Common offers: three months free, a downgrade to a cheaper tier, a switch to Signature at the current rate. Politely decline all of them if you truly want out.

Say "I would like a stamped copy of my cancellation form, please" and repeat it if the script continues. You are legally entitled to cancel; they cannot refuse the paperwork.

Pro Tips Before You Commit

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel online? Only in states with online cancellation laws (CA, NY, IL, VT, DE and a growing list).

Will I get a refund? No, only future charges stop. Fees already paid are non-refundable.

Do I need my member ID? Yes, bring your barcode number or the card. Without it, you will be told to come back.

Can someone else cancel for me? Only with a signed and notarized authorization letter naming them.

Bottom Line

Cancel in person at your home club right after your billing date, get a stamped copy, and confirm the annual fee is not about to hit. Anything less risks a surprise charge two months later.
