Quick Answer
Use four lines inside the 150 character limit: line one says who you help and how, line two is a credibility line (a number, a title, or a client name), line three is a clear call to action with an arrow pointing down, and line four is your link. Keep emojis to one per line, max.
Drop the inside jokes, drop the abstract poetry, drop the long list of personal interests. Anyone who lands on your profile decides in about three seconds whether to follow you. The bio is what closes that decision.
Why the bio matters more than the grid
The grid pulls people in. The bio decides whether they hit follow, save, or back. Your follower conversion rate is set by how clearly your bio answers two questions: who is this for, and what do I get if I stay. A good bio also doubles as your search snippet on Google when people look up your name.
Instagram only gives you 150 characters of bio text. Treat it like ad copy, not a diary entry.
The four line formula
- Line 1: who you help and how. A simple sentence. "I help new parents sleep through the night using gentle sleep training." Avoid vague nouns like "passionate" or "creative". Use concrete verbs.
- Line 2: credibility. One specific proof point. "Featured in Forbes" or "Trained 12,000 students" or "Founder of Acme Studio". Pick the strongest one you have. Skip lists.
- Line 3: call to action. Tell the reader what to do next. "Free meal plan below" or "Book a 1:1 consult" with a down arrow emoji to point at the link.
- Line 4: the link. Either a single direct URL or a link in bio tool (Beacons, Linktree, or your own landing page) that holds your top three destinations.

Things to leave out
Leave out long lists of interests ("dog mom, wine lover, runner, traveller"). They feel personal but they tell a stranger nothing about whether to follow. Leave out generic motivational quotes. Leave out a string of hashtags. Hashtags in the bio do not surface you in search and they look spammy.
Skip the "DM for collabs" line unless that is genuinely the action you want. It signals to your audience that you treat them as a marketing channel.
The handle, the name field, and keywords
Two fields above the bio also count. The Name field (not your @handle) is searchable. If you are a baker named Mark Davies, set the Name to "Mark Davies | Sourdough Baker" so you appear when people search "sourdough baker" near them.
The handle itself should be your real name, your business name, or your brand. Mixing in numbers and underscores hurts memorability. If your name is taken, add your city or your craft, not random characters.
Update the bio quarterly
A bio that fits you today will look stale in six months. Set a calendar reminder to revisit it every quarter. Refresh the credibility line with the most recent proof, swap the call to action to whatever you actually want people to do this season, and update the link.
Watch your saves and profile visits in Instagram Insights. A bio change that lifts those metrics is working.
Common mistakes
The biggest mistake is centring the bio. Centring looks aesthetic but it forces readers' eyes to bounce, which slows reading and lowers comprehension. Left aligned reads faster.
The second mistake is using emojis as bullet points instead of one strong icon per line. The third is making your link the same place forever (your homepage), instead of rotating it to whatever you are actively promoting.
The takeaway
A good Instagram bio is four short lines: who you help, why anyone should listen, what to do next, and one clean link. Keep it specific, drop the filler, and refresh it every quarter. Most accounts could double their follow rate by rewriting their bio in twenty minutes.
